PRIME MINISTER DISMISSES IHRC CALL FOR INSPECTION OF U.S. AIRCRAFT
Created:
13 Dec 2007
Released:
26 Aug 2011
Summary:
Report that In the Dail Taoiseach Bertie Ahern had rejected calls by the IHRC for random inspections of US aircraft alleged to be transiting through Ireland on rendition flights. It was in response to the Irish Human Rights Commision (IHRC) report released that day. Hours earlier Dermot Ahern had also rejected this call. Taoiseach said there was no evidence to substatiate their allegations and that Gardai already had the legal authority to board aircraft suspected of wrongdoing. He questioned the effectiveness of the inspection regime suggested by the IHRC, saying it had not adopted by any other European country. He also said that Gardai had inspected 6 flights alleged to be involved - all found to be carrying legel cargo and passengers.
