Summary:
Details a meeting with Department of Foreign Affairs official Rory Montgomery which was a follow-up meeting to that of Dec 1st between Dermot Ahern and Condi Rice in Washington. Describes the parliamentary pressure to search US aircraft at Shannon. Official says that Ahern was "pleased" with the meeting with Rice and that the Government of Ireland (GOI) continues to accept the US assurances on renditions. However he cited pressure from parliament to inspect planes and asked the US government (USG) to clarify its interpretation of "international law and sovereignty governing searches of state and state contracted aircraft." Said it would be valuable in guiding GOI's actions and policies. Current policy was described as similar to stopping a vehicle on the road - neither would be done, in normal circumstances, it said, without suspicion. GOI says no grounds for suspicion so no searches. Official expressed concern over Rice's speeches on her European tour about USG practices in Shannon and Europe.
